What is the Strain Index (SI)?

1

Hands Assessed

Choose the hand or hands performing the task. Dominant means the worker's preferred hand, rather than always the right hand.

2

Hand Assessment

Observe a representative work cycle. Select all six factors for each assessed hand; use the information icons for guidance.

Dominant Hand

2.1 Intensity of Exertion (Borg Scale)

2.2 Duration of Exertion (% of cycle)

2.3 Efforts per Minute

2.4 Hand/Wrist Posture

2.5 Speed of Work

2.6 Task Duration (hours per day)

Non-dominant Hand

2.1 Intensity of Exertion (Borg Scale)

2.2 Duration of Exertion (% of cycle)

2.3 Efforts per Minute

2.4 Hand/Wrist Posture

2.5 Speed of Work

2.6 Task Duration (hours per day)

Calculation Results

Review the conclusion and each hand's selected values and multipliers. Results update as you make selections.

Strain Index (SI) — —

SI is the product of six multipliers and has no units. Screening bands used here are: SI ≤3, lower; >3 to <5, uncertain; 5 to <7, elevated; and ≥7, high. These are screening categories, not a diagnosis or a guarantee of safety. Larger multipliers indicate greater contributions to the score.

Assessment Limitations

This tool uses the original Strain Index method to screen a single task for factors associated with hand, wrist, and forearm musculoskeletal disorders. Results depend on accurate observations and ratings. Scores and screening categories help prioritize ergonomic review; they are not a medical diagnosis, an individual injury prediction, or a guarantee of safety. Category boundaries may not apply equally across all industries and worker populations. Other exposures and tasks require separate consideration. Custom multipliers require professional judgment and are not assigned standard screening categories.
